Faun: A Creative Journey
So how did this idea come about. Well a while back I got a few Create a Monster Monster High Kits and wanted to give hair (called rooting or rerooting) one of the girls in that. That became a problem as they come with wigs and there is a hard cap in the top of the head that can't be rooted by standard means. Then I learned of a shop on line that sells replacement skull caps that can be rooted. I ordered some and waited. When they came they came with a freebee. A set of tiny horns.
Those two tiny white things in the picture above are them. Now when I saw them the first thing I thought was, Faun. It is a mythical creature that is half goat and half human. In this case a female. So I had my idea where to begin.
Well that's the complicated part. See I had a Monster High Draculara head floating around without a body. A friend of mine needed the Cat girl head so I sent it to her. Since she didn't have a body I decided to put the Draculara head on her. That meant going from the pink of her skin to the orange of the cat. I used my Changing Skin Tones Tutorial to get the match.
However, I didn't start there. First I rerooted her with some curly red orange hair. For some reason I failed to take a pic of that step. But you can see the results later on or in the photo above. I chose to leave her hair curly as I like the look of it. Kind of like sheep's fur.
Here is what she looked like before the color change.

That isn't something that poses a problem for me as I have changed the skin tone of a doll before using a Pastel Technique I came up with. After a color change and face-up she looked like this.
I gave her soft brown eyes. Now she matched the body. Still the shine on the body does make her look far more orange than the body. Once I spray that with matte sealer it will look better.
Now the next problem was her legs. I like the posing ability of the Monster High legs but they do not look like faun/goat legs. They needed another joint at the ankles for that.
I had left over pieces from a joint repair kit I bought for another doll. So I cut her feet off about 1/2 inch above the ankles. This was to allow for movement and retain that lower leg look of goats. Then I came across a surprise. The lower part of Monster High girl's legs are solid. I used a small drill bit, and my Dad's help, to drill holes in both parts of both legs. After adding the new joint I ended up with this.

Now that will give me the look I need and wanted. But still it was rather odd. So I got a bit of fake fur from an old stuffed animal and started covering her. Most fauns or satyrs have hairy goat legs. I wanted her to have the same. The addition of a tail that can be posed was as simple as adding one to it with wire. Here is what she looks like now.
See what I mean by the shin throwing the color match off? Well that and the fact this was taken indoors under bright light didn't help.
Hairy legs done. But the hoof shoes I have for a different doll just don't work right for her. Nor do they allow her to stand properly either. I will be fixing that soon. I have some Magic Sculpt ordered and as soon as it arrives she will be getting hooves. Now that will be fun.
So stay tuned to see how she turns out.
