So I've been curious about Needle Tatting for a while now. It's an old way of making lace with thread and a needle. That's as good as I can explain what it is. But now it is used for lots of different things from doilies to jewelry making. Trouble is I could only find Tutorials that went way too fast for a beginner or didn't explain what a picot was. You know, the instructions that are basically useless.
Then Saturday I came across a Youtube video that actually actually slowed the process down and explained it. Ruby Lockwood made a simple instructional video for making a simple earring. I had some of the basic supplies already for other projects I'm working on. The only thing I didn't have was a Tatting Needle. But hey, I reroot dolls and that is one long needle which seemed to be similar to what she was using.
So I started Tatting. First came a doily center just to see if I would like it. I did so next came these:

I added the Crystal Drop and they became a gift for my Mom. That's her wearing them. Say Hi, Mom.
Then I attempted a larger doily but lets just say I missed a step and it didn't quite work out the way I thought it would.

Rather than throw it out it became a head dress for one of my MSD Ball Jointed Dolls Mystie. Hey, it worked with her wonderful ears and coloring so well I'm thinking about making another goof with beads for her.
So I turned back to what worked and made these for a friend, Jo.

Forgive the quality of the photo. Indoor lighting sometimes turns things yellow on my camera after dark. They are actually black with green seed beads. Yeah, I figured out how to add them pretty quickly after learning to make them the first time.
And last night I decided Mom's Earrings could use a necklace to complete the looks so...

I pulled out the solid green crochet thread and got started. To match the earrings I made the interlocking rings flowery thing in the middle, but forgot to attach it to the green as I was making it. That's alright a few multi-colored pieces could fix that. And it turns out that was a rather lucky goof as well. The two extra pieces helps to balance the look and lengthens it fit the way I intended. Mom doesn't like chokers.
So that's what I learned over the weekend. It wasn't the craft I was intending to work on but since it is something I wanted to learn to do I'm happy.
Now, tonight I finish the necklace and attempt the doily again. Wish me luck.
